If you love oak trees and timelapse videos, this one is for you! In my latest project, I grew a magnificent oak tree from an acorn and captured the entire process in a 195-day timelapse. It’s a mesmerizing journey through the world of gardening, showcasing the magic of nature and the growth of a sturdy oak tree.

Starting the Journey: Cold Stratification

Oak trees require a cold stratification period to germinate. I began by placing an acorn in a wet paper towel and storing it in the fridge for 90 days. This chilling period mimics winter conditions, preparing the acorn for sprouting. Once the acorn started to germinate, the real adventure began.

The Timelapse: Witnessing Growth Day by Day

After the acorn germinated, I documented the entire growth process through a timelapse. For 195 days, I watched and recorded as the tiny seedling transformed into a robust oak tree. The timelapse captures every moment, from the first signs of life to the full-fledged sapling swaying in the breeze. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the life of an oak tree and the wonders of gardening.

Optimal Growing Conditions for Oak Trees

To ensure your oak tree thrives, it’s essential to provide the right growing conditions. Here’s a quick guide:

Substrate: Oak trees prefer well-draining soil. A mix of loamy soil with some sand and organic matter works best. This allows the roots to spread out and establish a strong foundation.

Temperature: While oak trees are hardy and can withstand various temperatures, they thrive best in a temperate climate. Ideal temperatures range from 60°F to 75°F (15°C to 24°C) during the growing season. However, they also need a cold period to break dormancy, as mentioned with cold stratification.

Watering: Consistent watering is crucial, especially in the early stages of growth. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Once established, oak trees are relatively drought-tolerant but still benefit from regular watering.

Light: Oak trees love sunlight. Ensure your tree gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Adequate light helps the tree develop strong branches and lush foliage.
