Growing Sundews: A Gardener’s Guide

If you’re a gardening enthusiast looking to cultivate sundews, here are some essential tips on their growing conditions:

Substrate

Sundews prefer a nutrient-poor substrate. A mix of sphagnum moss and perlite or silica sand works best. Avoid using regular potting soil, as it contains too many nutrients that can harm these delicate plants.

Temperature

These carnivorous plants thrive in temperatures ranging from 60°F to 85°F (15°C to 29°C). Maintaining a stable temperature within this range will keep your sundews happy and healthy.

Watering

Sundews require high humidity and consistently moist soil. Use distilled or rainwater to water your plants, as tap water contains minerals that can damage them. Keep the substrate damp but not waterlogged, and consider using a tray system to maintain the right moisture level.

Light

Sundews need plenty of light to thrive. If you’re growing them indoors, use artificial light with a full spectrum of wavelengths. Position the light source close to the plants, ensuring they receive around 12-16 hours of light daily. If you’re growing them outdoors, a spot with partial sun is ideal.
